“Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see” Hebrews 11:1
Christian counseling, is a unique lens based on the premise that there is a perspective on life beyond that of oneself, and fundamentally anchored in a relationship with Christ.. This is integral to Christian Counseling. Thus motives and behavior, when analyzed from this unique lens creates meaning and purpose which stands separate from the typical goals and motives addressed in therapy.
In secular counseling, we are strictly looking at personal understanding and wisdom to inform and determine choices, and understanding our “self”, self esteem, self confidence, identity and personal goals. All of these are common focus areas in therapy, but as individuals with faith, life is more than just about the “self”. Having an Christian perspective means that the center of one’s life belongs to God, and choices are based on the firm belief that God’s will, plan, and purpose is more meaningful than our own, and it transcends our individual desires.
A Spiritual perspective includes and transcends a secular one. A spiritual perspective does not compete with a secular, it includes it, because the sense of self and one’s unique talents and abilities are the tools that God has purposed in a very special individualized way. So building and enhancing one’s sense of self, is vital to God’s plan.
Losing a spiritual connection can cause a very real crisis in ones’ lives, as it often impacts real life choices. Aligning one’s spiritual values on an earthly plane one is a unique challenge and supporting a client on their spiritual journey, while they navigate an earthly life is a very special responsibility. Please let your therapist know if you are a Christian and your faith is an integral part of your core identity as we can tailor our treatment approach for you.
